How does your Inner Child feel?

Blog #2 Inner Child Activity and Intro

There have been many articles, books and discussions about the Inner Child. Just like most things in life, there is book learning and practical application. You can find lots of information about the Inner Child. Here I will encourage you to experience your inner child. Recognizing and experiencing the inner child living within you is our goal.

Our inner child is similar to the children you see around you. It needs safety and security to reveal itself. To be authentic it needs to know that the world and people around them are safe emotionally, physically, psychologically, spiritually and socially. Without security the inner child will withdraw into the shadows of your soul. It will remain hidden, isolated, lonely and seek to express itself covertly.

This world around us is damaged and harmful. Many children get the wrong messages about being a child. They do not receive the teaching of value, importance, security and unconditional love. Voids can be left behind when we as children don’t receive the positive messages to build security, self-love, self-acceptance, character, hope and more. Harmful words and voids can wound our inner child. Our feelings were created in and through our Inner Child.

It is possible to heal our wounds. The Holy Spirit is the teacher of the Trinity. Not only can the Holy Spirit reveal truths about us and the world, but the Holy Spirit can also dwell within us to fill our voids and comfort the wounds. The Holy Spirit is called the comforter, John 14:16. Humans are changing beings. We can grow, learn and adapt.

The activity for this connection is to allow your Inner Child to express itself and how It wants to reveal itself to you.

Activity – How your Inner Child is feeling

Supplies: 8x11 paper and drawing medium (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.)

Reminder: this activity is best done by using your non-dominant hand, the one you don’t write with. It will take longer but trust the process.

Find a comfortable place and position. Allow your non-dominant hand to choose the color(s) and way to express your feelings. Scribbling, pictures, just colors or patterns can be an expression of feelings. Don’t put expectations or judgments on the drawing. Allow the feelings to take form on the paper.

Follow up questions:

1.        How was this different from the last activity?

2.        Was there anything your inner child revealed to you?

3.        Do you recognize any feelings associated with your drawing?

4.        How do you feel about your artwork?

5.        Take a moment to pray. Ask God about your artwork. Listen to see if you receive any feedback, impression or response from God.

Consider creating a binder or folder to hold the various artworks you do during these activities.

How do you feel about yourself?

How do you feel about these activities?

Are you just reading without the activities?
